Number Line

Writing numbers downward on a Number Line makes it piece of cake to tell
which numbers are greater or lesser

A number on the left is less than a number on the correct.

Examples:

  • 5 is less than viii
  • −one is less than 1
  • −8 is less than −5

A number on the right is greater than a number on the left.

Examples:

  • 8 is greater than 5
  • 1 is greater than −1
  • −5 is greater than −8

lunch

Case: Dejeuner

  • John borrowed $iii to pay for his dejeuner
  • Virginia borrowed $5 to pay for her lunch
  • Alex had plenty money for lunch and has $three left over

Place these people on the number line to find who is poorest and who is richest.

Owing money is negative
Having money is positive

So John has "3", Virginia has "5" and Alex has "+iii"

greater less
number line: -5, -3, 3

Now information technology is like shooting fish in a barrel to see that:

Virginia is poorer than John (−5 is less than −3)
and John is poorer than Alex (−3 is less than three)
and Alex is, of course, the richest!

Absolute Value means to think only nearly how far a number is from nada.

absolute value -6 is 6, 6 is 6

For instance "6" is vi away from nada, only "−6" is also vi abroad from aught.

So the accented value of vi is 6, and the accented value of −6 is also half-dozen
